When other little girls were playing house and dress-up, Stella Rogers was playing Cops and Robbers and Cowboys and Indians with the other neighborhood boys, or reading fantasy and science fiction stories. She wore trousers unless it was time for church, and generally didn't do anything little girls of the 1920s were expected to do, or how to behave.

She also had a stubborn streak a mile wide, and refused to back down when any boys tried to exclude her from a group - generally leading to name-calling, and on one particular occasion, shoving. Before it could escalate into a fight, though, another boy stepped in. Angry at being "rescued," Stella turned her anger toward the newcomer, shouting that she didn't need his help. Unfortunately, the exertion of the fight combined with the yelling set off a mild asthma attack, through which the boy helped her settle down, before introducing himself as Bucky Barnes.

The Beginning of a Legacy )

STATS:
Hair color: blonde
Eye color: blue
Height: 6'
Weight: 132 lbs
Miscellany:

1. Due to a childhood of chronic asthma, chest colds and bronchitis, Stella's voice is deeper than one would expect, especially for a woman of her age, who's never smoked. With little effort she can drop her voice to that of a man's timbre, and it's in fact harder for her to sound feminine than it is to sound masculine.

2. The Captain America uniform is shaped and padded in such a way as to allow ease of movement, but to hide the more obviously feminine curves of Stella's body. Likewise, the cowl disguises her jawline somewhat. Because of this, she's seen most often during the war in her Captain America uniform, and never in regular military dress.

3. Stella French braids her hair to fit beneath her uniform cowl. She only learned how to do this after she wakes in the future; during the war, after her transformation, she cut her hair into a pixie cut so it didn't get in her way, and also was less likely to give away her gender, should she be seen unmasked.

Captain America was lost to sea when the enemy aircraft he was aboard crashed in the ocean, in 1944.

Stella Rogers woke up in a medical facility an undetermined time later. A black man with an eyepatch was seated in a chair at the foot of her bed. He wore a leather trench coat and an expression Stella was very familiar with. If she'd known the modern vernacular then, she would have thought his look said basically bitch, don't fuck with me, or I will cut you.

"I have a simple question for you," the man began, as soon as he saw her eyes were open and focused on him. "A team found a downed plane in the arctic. They woke up a highly decorated United States military officer at 3am, because they found Captain America's shield, and presumably, Captain America himself."

The emphasis he put on the pronoun gave Stella a good clue as to what the man's question would be.

"Can you tell me why, instead of the famous Man With a Plan we were all expecting when the ice was melted, we discovered you?"

Stella stared at the man for a long, silent moment, the man staring implacably back, before she drew a deep breath. "I'm afraid that's classified."

Whatever reaction she was expecting, the unimpressed raised eyebrow wasn't it. "I've got clearance," he said, and she could detect just the smallest hints of amusement in his voice and in the lines around his mouth.

"Then you shouldn't be asking me," Stella replied. "Colonel Phillips can tell you what you're asking about."

This time the silence was drawn out while Stella waited for the man to respond, but he seemed intent on studying her face. Stella's stomach began to roil and sink as the implications of his silence started tumbling through her head.

Finally, the man straightened in his chair. "Unfortunately, no one directly associated with Captain America or Project Rebirth is available to comment or explain the current situation. That just leaves you."

That just leaves you.

Stella was about to learn that truer words had never been spoken to her.
